North Yorkshire’s plentiful crystal-clear plunge pools, waterfalls, gorges, weirs and fast flowing rivers will have those seeking budget friendly outdoor fun exploring the Yorkshire dales.
Here is a selection of the some of the best and most beautiful locations on offer, taken from the Wild Guide series latest edition, North East England, which includes locations in the Yorkshire Dales and Moors.
13. Ghaistrill’s Strid, River Wharfe
Exciting rocky pools and rapids. The lower pools can be clear enough for snorkelers including a large reach for a longer swim. Warmer rock pools for the less experienced. The upstream rapids have a chute so care must be taken as dangerous currents can form in high water. Do not swim after rain. The spot is located in Grassington. Photo: http://www.wildswimming.co.uk
14. Loup Scar, River Wharfe
Loup Scar's terrifying jump from the path which leads into a small, very deep plunge pool and is only for the most experienced swimmers. During the summer there is usually a bunch of young people attempting this but it is not for the faint hearted. Photo: http://www.wildswimming.co.uk
15. Ibbeth Peril & Hell’s Cauldron, Howgills
Known as the best location for skinny dipping. The Ibbeth Peril is a large plunge pool in the often-dry bed of the River Dee.
There is also a cave, leading to miles of passageway and a very large cavern. Enter only in sustained dry weather: The Peril pool can rise fast and the caves can flood. The whole gorge can be explored but requires climbing skills. Photo: http://www.wildswimming.co.uk
