Valkyries edged out by Bishop Auckland

The visitors dominated the first half through excellent forward work and back play, the score at half-time was 10-0 with tries firstly from JJ Glanvill and then Bex Carr and Scarborough finished the first half the stronger team.

From the kick-off in the second half the home side found touch and gained territory deep in the Scarborough half. They managed to control the game from this point and got two hard earned tries from their big forwards.

Valkyries captain Cathy-Ann Myers said: “Our defence was very structured and we made lots of tackles but without possession, our energy was sapped, allowing the hosts to maintain control of the game.

“After a period of 20 minutes, the score was 12-10, and Bishop Auckland managed to make a break down the wing. Good cover tackling slowed the ball down but Bishop’s strong forward pack were determined and managed to get another converted try, leaving the score 19-10.”

She added:”We showed great heart and determination and really took the game to Bishop Auckland in the last 10 minutes and our efforts were rewarded by a well worked team try, scored by Jess Bray, converted by Mel Halstead.

“Unfortunately this was too little too late, and Bishop Auckland ran out deserving winners with a scoreline of 19-17. It really was a game of two halves, and the loss of concentration after half-time cost us the game.”
