SUNDAY LEAGUE: Cayton sink leaders Ayton

Cayton took the lead in this action-packed encounter, Danny Collins applying the finishing touch after the hosts beat the Ayton offside trap.

Ayton levelled through a Mike Grayshan penalty, awarded for handball, in the 70th minute, but two minutes from time Holden took the ball past several Ayton players before turning inside the box and smashing his shot home.

Cayton player-boss John Best singled out centre-back Kieran Glave as man of the match for the hosts, who are now well-placed for a promotion challenge.

Ayton chief Mark Plumpton said: “We had a few chances and a draw would probably have been a fair result but fair play to Cayton.

“This result all but ends our title hopes.”

He added: “Man of the match for us was right-back Tom Hudson while central midfielder Dan Appleby also impressed.”

Fylingdales Reserves hot-shots Tom Shrimpton, Ben Thompson and Josh Hopley banged in a brace apiece as they defeated visitors Scarborough Campus 7-1.

Shrimpton opened the scoring, with Hopley making it 2-0 and further goals from Thompson, Hopley and man of the match Shrimpton making it 5-0 at the break.

Michael Stables pulled a goal back after the interval, assisted by Paul Hill, but Thompson’s second and a Si Forde effort sealed the 7-1 win.

Ed Burrows was the man of the match for the students, with a strong display from Connor Reynolds.

Newlands Reserves cruised to a 6-1 home win against Alma.

Player-manager Phil Clothier scored Alma’s goal from the penalty spot, while centre-back Keith Savage was the visitors’ man of the match.

Newlands went to the top of the first division with a 7-1 home win against a plucky Barrowcliff side.

Man of the match Stefan Moon banged in two goals for the hosts, as did Stew Bates, with Ben Luntley, Luke Tinker and Drew McCoubrey also on target.

Adam Martin’s 25-yard shot pulled it back to 4-1 for a Barrowcliff side who created several good chances in the first half.

The star man for Barrowcliff was keeper Rich Curtis, who made some first-class saves.
