SATURDAY LEAGUE REVIEW OF THE 2019-20 SEASON - PART TWO

While the Scarborough Saturday League Division One title race looked set to go down to the wire before the coronavirus pandemic called a halt to play, Edgehill Reserves had already wrapped up the Division Two title before the FA decided all grassroots football was to be declared null and void.

We will take a look at how the 2019-20 campaign panned out before sport was halted by the pandemic, looking at the months of November and December.

NOVEMBER

Liam Salt’s hat-trick saw high-flying Newlands earn a 4-0 home win against Scalby in the first round of games in November.

FC Rosette got their Division Two title challenge back on track with a 9-0 win at Goal Sports, Alex Wray banging home a hat-trick for the visitors.

Edgehill Reserves stepped into pole position in the title race with a 6-0 home win against rivals West Pier Reserves, and the goal-rush continued as Cayton Athletic won 13-2 at Eastfield Town and hat-tricks from Olly Parker and Chris Stubbings fired Seamer Sports Reserves to a 10-5 triumph at Eastfield Athletic.

A great team effort from Edgehill saw them to a 7-3 home success against Scalby in the second round of November fixtures, while Itis Itis Rovers won 3-1 at home to Seamer and West Pier triumphed 4-2 at Filey Town.

West Pier Reserves got their Division Two season back on track with a 3-2 home success against Snainton, Edgehill Reserves defeated Seamer Reserves 4-0 and Scalby Reserves won 3-0 at home to Goal Sports.

In the next round of games, Filey Town claimed a crucial 6-2 win at Division One relegation rivals Ayton.

The Harbour Cup saw four of the league’s top sides lock horns, West Pier losing 3-2 at home to Newlands and Edgehill emerging 4-1 winners at Itis Itis Rovers.

The Division Two title race continued to be tight as Edgehill Reserves won 4-1 at Goal Sports and West Pier Reserves scraped a 4-3 victory at Scalby Reserves.

The following Saturday the Pier second string romped to a 17-0 win at Eastfield Athletic, Callum Myers smashing in six goals and Rob Whitehead five.

Edgehill Reserves were involved in a crazy game as Jake Reeves’ hat-trick helped them to a 9-6 home success against Eastfield Town.

The final weekend of November saw Edgehill ease to a 5-1 District Cup win at Filey Town, and in Division Two Edgehill’s young reserves sneaked a 2-1 home success against basement club Goal Sports while West Pier Reserves hammered hosts FC Rosette 9-1, Callum Myers scoring a hat-trick.

DECEMBER

Ben Luntley, Chris Pearson and Ben David scored two goals apiece as Newlands started December with a 9-1 home win against Ayton in Division One, Hunmanby United winning 2-0 at Filey Town in the derby clash.

Jake Reeves’ hat-trick steered Edgehill Reserves to a 6-3 win at Scalby Reserves in the League Trophy, while Cayton Athletic won 6-3 at home to Goal Sports.

FC Rosette earned a 7-1 win at Eastfield Athletic in the only Division Two game that weekend, super-sub Al Wray scoring a double.

Hunmanby continued their good December with a 2-0 home win against Lealholm in the Harbour Cup a week later, Seamer Sports also progressing thanks to a 6-3 victory at home to Kirkdale United.

Despite it being just before Christmas there was no season of goodwill in the game between Division One rivals West Pier and Edgehill as Pier had Mikey Pickering and boss Will Jenkinson dismissed and the visitors had Kieran Link and Jamie Patterson sent off, Rich Tolliday’s hat-trick proving crucial for Pier.

In Division Two, Seamer won 5-1 at Goal Sports and Snainton swept to a 6-0 victory at home to Eastfield Athletic.

In the last round of games before the festive break, Neil Forsyth’s double steered Itis Itis Rovers to a 4-1 home success against their title rivals Edgehill and Filey Town won 3-0 at Seamer Seamer Sports to give them hope of beating the drop.
