Speaking at the count at the Spa, Mr Fearnley said he is "heartened" by the "brilliant, grassroots campaign" he and his team have run, adding that over 100 people have been involved in campaigning for the party on Thursday alone.

"It's been a privilege to be part of that campaign because we've run it in a way that has been about connecting with people and talking to people and listen," he said.

"I think it's all to play for, although the exit poll was disappointing from a national point of view, it is just a sample, we're not going to know the full result until the last vote is counted.

"I think there's going to be some very interesting, potentially unusual results across the country and I think it's all to play for here, we could be one of those results because from speaking to people at the doorstep there's a huge number of deep social issues that people are concerned about.

"People are really struggling in terms of low wages, housing situation, health and social care and these things do not just go away or get solved whether we stay in the EU or come out of the EU."

The process of counting the votes has now begun.

Results will be announced later this morning.
