There will be cones and barriers on Foreshore Road to narrow traffic lanes and provide safe space for pedestrians to walk in the road if they need to avoid others.

The measures will be in place tonight until Sunday.

If successful, North Yorkshire County Council says it will consider continuing them.

The council has taken several steps to help people to stay two metres apart including street signs and temporarily closing roads and parking bays to allow enough space for people to pass.

In Scarborough, Bland’s Cliff is closed at its junction with Eastborough and Newborough, Church Lane is shut at the junction with Castle Road, and Foreshore Road and Sandside are closed from the Spa Roundabout to the Toll House Roundabout.

In Filey, only disabled parking bays are open in Murray Street and only disabled parking bays and permit holder parking bays are open on Ravine Road.

And in Whitby, Raithwaite Chipping Dump is shut.
