New hybrid sporting attraction is set to tee off in Scarborough

The borough’s first ever 
FootGolf course has received planning permission on land off Killerby Lane in Cayton.

It was approved at a meeting of Scarborough Borough Council’s planning and 
development committee on Thursday, last week.

The applicant, Valerie Green, will construct a 
ten-hole course which will border her existing business - a stained glass window exhibition centre.

FootGolf is played the same way as golf except players use a football instead of a golf ball and the ball is kicked.

Players record the number of kicks on each hole and the winner is the person who gets round the nine holes in the least number of kicks.

The plan met with unanimous approval from the members of the borough council’s planning committee.

Cllr Martin Smith told the committee: “I think this will be an exciting new attraction for our coast and I think that families will love it.

“It is the perfect location, you won’t be able to see it from the road.

“It’s really a marvellous idea.”

The course will be created by cutting the existing grass to different lengths to create a number of different length holes, some more than 100 metres in length.

The players will be aiming to get the ball into a 21 inch diameter hole.

Cllr Eric Broadbent also threw his weight behind the application.

He added: “I think this will be an excellent thing for residents and tourists and yet another feather in our cap.

“I wish [the applicant] all the best and I hope it is a great success.”

A FootGolf course opened near Brildington last year and has proved very popular with people on the East coast.

The applicant has stated that the site has room to accommodate up to 40 cars when it opens.

Refreshment and toilet facilities will be provided in the Stained Glass Centre next door.
