As often happens, I was thinking about pie the other day and it suddenly struck me that I’d not been to the Piebald Inn for a while to sample their really rather marvellous wares. On my return to Hunmanby, I find things pretty much as they’ve always been, with one spiffing addition.

To recap, The Piebald offers a menu of 52 different pies. Each is named after a breed of horse and each portion is about the size as a paperback book and as thick as several paperback books stacked on top of each other.

The menu is broken down into sections, depending on their fillings. So there’s beef (eight options), chicken (seven), lamb (six) pork (eight) and so on and then there are more exotic options - game, goat, haggis - and also fish and vegetarian options. They’re all served with a choice of potato, peas and seasonal vegetables and – most importantly – the thick, dark gravy comes in endless supply.

There are so many pies on offer, it’s easier to say which of them I wouldn’t recommend. Except I’ve yet to come across a single one that isn’t a masterpiece in its own right. The great thing is that I’ve barely scratched the surface of the menu. At the current rate of consumption, I could live to 187 and still have a handful I’ve not tried.

The new addition I mentioned isn’t a pie, however, it’s a blackboard. On entering the pub, it is recommended you take a photo of the huge blackboard in the corner that keeps tally of how many of which pie is currently on offer. There’s nothing worse than perusing the menu, deciding on your pie and then finding it is sold out. And then your second choice is sold out. Now, you pick a pie, check the pic and you can see for yourself – live – which pies are on and which are off.

It may seem a tiny innovation, but it’s an absolute game-changer in the surprisingly delicate world of pie gustation.
