We all value our independence, but when we lose that through accidents, ill health or aging, or have a mobility condition from birth, the effects can be devastating.

Driffield Mobility, a Yorkshire company, is determined to help people live their life to the full. As specialists in vehicle adaptations, they can adapt private cars, or add independence solutions to taxis and minibuses, making the service fully inclusive. For many, the difference is life-changing.

Ask Rich Willis, who has had a form of dwarfism since birth, and whose mobility and flexibility have evolved over the years. When he’s not representing Britain as a power lifter – he’s a five times world champion – Rich has been a Driffield customer, and has benefitted massively from their guidance and expert knowledge over the years. He’s now joined the business, to offer his inside knowledge of changing needs and innovative adaptions which can help others.

Athlete Rich is now waiting for a shoulder replacement, which could see his needs changing again, both in the short term as he recovers from the op, and longer term.

“This is a family-run business and we are a one-stop shop for all your mobility needs,” said Rich. “The firm has always been there to improve the lives of customers, and with me joining I can offer the additional empathy and knowledge of having been a customer myself for many years.

“Driffield Mobility has been able to adapt the mobility aids I have needed over the years to reflect my changing physical condition. This has meant I have been able to keep driving my own car, even when I lost the use of my legs for driving. Without this, I would have been reliant on others and would have lost much of my independence and spontaneity.

“As a dad, this means my young daughter and I have been able to explore the UK together and make lots of lovely family memories.”

Potential customers will be the users themselves and their families; but the firm can adapt a range of vehicles, so would equally benefit taxis, school transport or charities.

Primarily the firm focusses on adapting brand new Motability cars to suit the driver’s needs, or changing the vehicles the customer already has, making access and use much more achievable. However, if you need a wheelchair or scooter, Driffield Mobility can also help guide you to choose the perfect one for your physical needs and your lifestyle.

What adaptations can be made?

The service is designed to suit the customer – you might need a scooter or wheelchair hoist to transfer it to your boot, hand controls for your car, or the very latest digital technology called Space Drive - which adds joystick control, gas brake levers or a mini steering wheel to the vehicle. This is a huge benefit to those who have severe physical limitations, and can transform everyday life.
