Medieval jousting goes ahead at Sewerby Hall and Gardens ... on facebook

Easter Sunday at Sewerby Hall and Gardens has become synonymous with one major event for around the last 26 years – the annual jousting in the grounds.

The current closure of the house and facilities means that the jousting cannot take place this year, but the venue is ensuring that jousting can still be enjoyed in 2020 : a video of the jousting from 2019 by the Knights of Nottingham will be posted on facebook from 8am on Easter Sunday on the Sewerby Hall page.

In addition, followers of Sewerby Hall will be encouraged to make their own swords and shields and recreate medieval jousting in the safety of their own back gardens.

Marie Gascoigne, general manager of Sewerby Hall and Gardens, said : “ We are all extremely disappointed that we can’t do real live jousting this year, along with our programme of Easter events, but we can revive happy memories from last year, and whet the appetite for next year with our video!

“We are encouraging our social media followers to do a different activity at home every Sunday in our Back Garden Challenge; last week was a Teddy Bears’ Picnic, and this week will of course be medieval jousting – to be enjoyed safely at home.”
