Actress and singer Maureen Nolan is in the mood for opening night of Footloose: The Musical at Bridlington Spa.
Preparations have been going well said Maureen, one of the singing sisters who topped the charts with I’m In The Mood For Dancing.
She plays Vi Moore in the show and is sharing a cottage with Nigel Lister who plays her on stage husband the Rev Shaw Moore.
“The show is pure fun,” said Maureen, “although Nigel and me bring a serious tone to the show. This is a musical with substance,” she said.
Based on the 1984 screen hit starring Kevin Bacon, Footloose: The Musical tells the story of city boy Ren, who has to move to a rural backwater in America where dancing has been banned by the Rev Moore.
All hell breaks out as Ren breaks loose and soon has the whole town up on its feet.
It features classic 80s hits including Holding Out for a Hero, Almost Paradise, Let’s Hear it for the Boy and the title track, Footloose.
Maureen is no stranger to the Spa. She played Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers and saw her sisters there in summer season.
“I have been speaking very highly of Bridlington,” she said, “And I am delighted we are launching Footloose here.” If time allows she is also looking forward to visitng Scarborough, Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby, all of which she loves.
Maureen has been singing with her sisters since she was nine years old, when they became one of Europe’s first girl bands, The Nolans.
Best known for their smash hit single I’m in the Mood for Dancing, The Nolans enjoyed phenomenal record sales worldwide, and worked with some of the world’s most respected artists including Frank Sinatra.
With other members of her family, she has made the transition from singer to star of musical theatre and stage. She was the fourth of the Nolan Sisters to play Mrs Johnstone, earning them entry in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2007.
The Nolans line up changed many times throughout the decades but there was one constant - Maureen who never left the group until they disbanded in 2005.
The original girl group reunited in 2009 with a new album, DVD and a sell-out UK tour backed by industry giants Universal and Live Nation with some venues selling out within hours.
Maureen has also toured the UK playing Sadie in the comedy musical Girl’s Behind, Jill in Mum’s The Word and Sarah in the hit stage play The Naked Truth in which she had to pole dance.
Maureen has also appeared in Stardust - A musical flashback in time in 2007 and The Eva Cassidy Story – Over the Rainbow in 2011. Maureen returned to Mum’s The Word in 2008 playing opposite her late & very much missed sister Bernie, who died of cancer in 2013.
“Bernie paved the way for the rest of us. She was the first to do musical theatre and was in The Bill and Brookside,” said Maureen.
“She gave us the courage to do other things.”
Maureen is a veteran of 20 pantomimes and has even appeared alongside two of her other sisters (Anne and Linda) in past Christmas shows. In 2011, she starred in the world premiere of the new musical version of Peter Pan at the Canal theatre in Dublin.
She was in Cinderella in Rotherham for the season just gone. Her sister Coleen is on the panel of ITV’s Loose Women.
Maureen loves to have her family around her when she’s not working and she lives in Blackpool with her husband Ritchie. Married in 2010 at La Envía, Almeria in Spain after more than 20 years together, they have a son, Danny and two grandchildren.
