ONE of Bridlington’s longest running annual events is set to be a winner.

Preparations for the 15th annual Royal British Legion Bridlington Weekend Rally are almost complete.

Based at Bridlington Spa it is one of the biggest events of its kind in the UK attracting an average of 350 or so to each of its events amounting up to about 1,000 people over the week end, much of them helping fill the town’s guest houses and hotels.

This year’s rally coincides with the 90th anniversary of the Legion itself and has been given an extra boost which organisers, the Bridlington branch of the British Legion, itself one of only seven branches in the region established as founder members, hopes will bring in more local visitors.

This year, it starts on Friday September 2 running to Sunday September 4, slightly earlier than previous years, and to mark the anniversary year, the branch has replaced the traditional informal welcome and get-together night on the Friday with a dance to the Frank Cleveland 15 piece Big Band.

“We are hoping to attract more local people who want to enjoy the atmosphere and dancing,” said Bridlington branch president Barry Moody,

As one of the few remaining events of its kind is a magnet for supporters from many parts of the country.

According to Mr Moody they, more than local people, have helped make it what it is and kept it alive for so long.

There’s a big band sound of a different kind on Saturday with a concert by the Kings Division military band. Another dance opportunity follows, this time to regular guests the eight piece Opus One band from Scarborough.

As is the tradition, Sunday will see a thanksgiving service at Priory Church, starting at 12.30pm followed by a parade led by the 150 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps (TA) from Hull.

They will gather on Station Approach to depart around 1.45pm for the walk down to the Spa for a further band concert.

Tickets costing £10 each for the Friday night dance are available on the doors which open at 7pm.

Tickets, £20, advance booking £18, are available for the Kings Division Band and dancing to Opus One are available from the Spa Box Office -01262 678285. Further details and bookings are also available from Barry Moody on 01262 676622.
