Bridlington will be the ‘resort for sport’ this weekend, with three major national events taking place around the town - the UK Windsurfing Championship, the Zapcat Grand Prix and the International UK Open Footgolf Championship.

The three events have been signed up by the council’s events service, EY Events, and as well as drawing crowds, it will provide a timely boost to the area’s economy.

The UK Windsurfing Championship is a regular event in the town and attracts around 100 competitors for two days of racing along Bridlington’s North Beach.

A new event this year is the Zapcat Grand Prix, which will take place along Bridlington’s South Beach, with a fast and exhilarating series of speedboat races using small boats that race close to the shoreline and promenade.

Twenty boats are expected for this first event and the race is part of a series that visits locations, such as London, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

There will be a dry pit for the boats on the promenade where members of the public can look at the boats and get close up.

For those less enthusiastic about water sports, Bridlington Links Golf Club will host the International UK Open Footgolf Championship.

This is a new sport which is growing rapidly in the UK, especially around the East Yorkshire area and it is the first of its kind in the world offering a cash prize to the winner.

It will also be the biggest Footgolf event ever held, with entrants from Holland, Hungary, Belgium, Italy and even Argentina as well as around the UK.

Limited entries are also still available for the UK Open Footgolf Championship with more information found on the Footgolf website or by calling 0800 6899552.

Anyone with an interest in football or sport in general is encouraged to come and have a go.

Kieran Lawry from East Yorkshire Events said: “For us to bring such top class events to Bridlington is a major coup buthaving three national events in one weekend is just unbelievable.

“There will be something of interest for everyone, whether visitors or residents alike. The three events are nicely linked up on our short stretch of coastline by the town’s major visitor attractions of The Spa, Leisure World and Sewerby Hall and Gardens.

“We are really looking forward to welcoming the action packed ZapCat Grand Prix for the first time while the Footgolf will be a huge event with entrants from as far as Argentina competing and the whole event being filmed by TransWorld Sport.

“The weekend really highlights our commitment to the area and our drive to bring such high profile events to the East Coast.

“Spectators are welcome to come along to all three events where they will be able to watch this top class action completely free of charge.”
