RACING AHEAD: Some more trainers to follow in October

Racing pundit Tony McCormick from www.irishbigracetrends.com beforetheoff.com and racing radio station racingfm.com presents his weekly column.

Two weeks ago I wrote about a number of trainers who have their strings ready for early strikes in October. Nigel Twiston-Davies has only had one runner – a loser, from the criteria stated, though his stable does appear to be behind at the moment with one winner and two places from 14 runners in the last two weeks.

Jonjo O’Neill has had six qualifiers for the rules mentioned two weeks ago with just one winner at 11/4. At the time of writing the stable currently boasts three winners from 19 runners in the last two weeks.

Blindly back Dr Richard Newland in the last 14 days would have you in profit with his 50% S/R, three winners from six runners. Following the guidelines would only have thrown up one qualifier, that being 15/8 winner Top Cat Henry.

The star of the show though for our four to follow is undoubtedly trainer Neil Mulholland. The Conkwell Grange trainer has had five winners from 11 runners in the last seven days, a 45% S/R. I wrote two weeks ago, following the trainer’s runners aged between four and seven, with no more than four runs in the season and in Class Three contests or lower, will return a healthy profit.

Mulholland’s string is up and firing in October with, following the rules, a massive 80% S/R and a 19.83 profit to a one point stake. Barton Antix (11/2), Ashcott Boy (100/30), Whats Left (4/1) and Pure Poteen at 8/1 are the four winners from just five qualifying runners. You must remember though to only follow this stable for the next seven to 10 days, as Mulholland has his string peaking at this time.

Four trainers to keep a check on in the next couple of weeks in Handicap Hurdles are Alan King, Newmarket trainer Neil King, Tom Symonds and Dr Richard Newland. You can follow these trainers when running in Class three, four and five races, aged between four and six years old and only runners that are GB, Irish or French-bred, with those runners coming from the Neil King stable in particularly good shape.

In the next couple of weeks, Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls will be releasing their forward Novice Hurdlers, along with trainers Harry Fry and Charlie Longsdon. Following these four trainers over the last three years has reaped a 34% S/R with a 20 point profit. Fry has started in good style with two wins from four runners this season. Longsdon has had four winners from 12 starters in the last week, while Henderson boasts a 40% S/R and Nicholls a 22% S/R in the same time period.

Two other pointers to look out for are the qualifiers from the Nicholls and Fry stables running at Exeter, while Nicholls and Henderson Novice Hurdlers should be double-checked at meetings at Fakenham, Kempton and Wincanton.
