The Volleyball England Beach Tour brought the glorious weather back to Bridlington over the weekend.
After a number of years away from the East Yorkshire coast, the event returned and was met with great support for some of the best beach volleyball players from across the UK.
South Cliff Beach was bouncing with the players battling it out to gain entry into the National Tour Finals in Margate on August 20/21.
In the women’s final, after bowing out early at the previous stage of the VEBT in Weymouth, top seeded Scottish pairing Coutts/Beattie shocked Drozdziel/Agnieszka 21-13 in the first set. Despite a slightly closer battle in the second set, Coutts/Beattie proved strong to comfortably see out the match 2-1 (21-15).
The final match of the weekend saw the men’s final competed between 16-year-old twins Bello/Bello and eighth seeds Poole/Butcher. Team Bello were edged out 22-20 in the first before losing the second set 21-12 meaning Poole/Butcher were the VEBT Bridlington Champions.
Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, said: “We were delighted with this event and it was great to welcome some of the country’s elite beach volleyball players to Bridlington.
“This event fitted perfectly with our Active Coast vision which aims to provide residents and visitors with the opportunity to take part in year round leisure and cultural activity on the East Riding coastline.
“It also enabled us to showcase our beautiful coastline and award winning beaches while watching a premier sporting event.”
