Young karting star Matthew Bonnett enjoyed success at two meetings as his 2016 season goes from strength to strength.

He was a late entry at Fulbeck in Grantham for round three of the NKF Championships, and in dry conditions, he benefited from a perfect set-up from his team to be the fastest in qualifying.

On race day on Sunday, Bonnett won all three heats which gave him pole position for the final.

He created a massive gap, which he maintained all through the final, making it impossible for the other drivers to catch him .

Bonnett said: “I knew I had a comfortable gap but until the last lap board went up, I was still praying nothing went wrong.”

A worry-free final lap saw him cross the line with his hand waving in the air, thrilled with the result.

Earlier in the month, he had enhanced his reputation in round two of the National Championships at the Grantham International Circuit and Bonnett believes he has a secret weapon this season.

He has been training with Steve Tighe from Blast Fitness, and said: “Without being fit, this would be impossible.

“Steve is a true inspiration to me, and I thank him for his time and dedication in getting me ready for my races.”

At Grantham, he lined up on a strong grid of 32 drivers.

He made lots of brave manouvres, braking late down the inside of three drivers at a time and sending them wide. His team said he was brave and drove faultlessly.

He was up for a podium finish for the rookie trophy again, but an eager manouvre cost him a bumper penalty which cost him the finish he wanted.

“I am delighted I have maintained my position and hope to build on it in my next round at the end of this month,” Bonnett added.

He also thanked Arrow Cars in Bridlington for their sponsorship.
