James Thompson scored two tries as Bridlington earned a 29-22 home win against Cleckheaton to move up to fourth in the North One East table.

The other try-scorers for the hosts were Harvey Morrison and Callam Sanderson.

Sam Wragg kicked a penalty and three conversions.

Brid coach Shaun Fearn said: “We started off very well and stuck to the game plan and the interplay between the backs and the forwards was much improved.

“We scored some very good tries in the first half, and took a 22-5 lead into the interval.

“We started the second half strong, but after an altercation between the sides, which resulted in a yellow card for us and a red for them, we seemed to go off the boil a little.

“The final score of 29-22, was a little nerve-racking, but we still won which shows character.

“Currently we have 15 points from the first four games, and are fourth in the table, which is great considering we are developing as a team with many changes from last year.

“What is really pleasing is the way we have improved from game to game and are learning from mistakes and adapting to playing to our strengths.

“We are getting a lot to training, which is great, as it puts pressure on all players as no one is guaranteed a shirt, it has to be earned.

“Ryan Girking and myself are doing a lot of the coaching, and it is really pleasing how the lads are responding.

“We play Consett away on Saturday and we will not underestimate any team in this league and the lads will be reminded that every game will need 100% commitment, if not we will get stung.”
