Bridlington RUFC director of rugby Rich Girking was full of praise for Doncaster Phoenix after they crushed his team 58-17 to claim the Yorkshire One title.
Girking said: “They were excellent, they were first class.
“They had similar players when we went there for the away game, but had picked up a couple of half backs who controlled the game.
“Over the past month they have started to put some big scores on the board, so they have found the link between the forwards and backs.
“We knew we had to match their forwards but never really did that. We had a makeshift line-up anddidn’t get to grips with them.
“For the first 20 minutes we didn’t touch the ball. After that we composed ourselves, got back to 21-13 at half time and I felt that if we could get the first score, we could push them.
I couldn’t fault our lads for effort but we were beaten by a stronger, bigger and fitter teamRich Girking
“I couldn’t see us winning the game but Doncaster came out and steamrollered us. We had picked up two injuries in the first half, and that meant we couldn’t swap anybody in the second half when we had some very tired bodies.
“We tackled and tackled as much as we could and never gave up. I couldn’t fault our lads for effort but we were beaten by a stronger, bigger and fitter team.
“They gave us a hiding but even in the last 10 minutes we managed to get the last try and proved our character.
“Our Yorkshire Shield semi-final win against Malton the week before had taken too much out of us.
“The physio was working overtime and on Tuesday we had only had a light training session because everyone was recovering.
“If we had a full squad, I think we could have shaved 20 points off Doncaster’s score.”
