WHILE the world’s top golfers were battling it out in the PGA Championships at Wentworth last weekend, representatives from a schools golf project in Bridlington were at the Surrey course to collect an award of their own.
The Bridlington School Sports Partnership picked up The Bonallack Award for its work in conjunction with Flamborough Head Golf Club to promote the sport to youngsters.
The award was made by the Golf Foundation as part of their 2012 Annual President’s Awards Ceremony, where only nine honours were given out.
Angel Sanderson, partnership development manager, said: “This is a huge honour for the partnership and is a testament to one of the great projects happening across the 65 schools within the SSP.
“We would not have received this award if it were not for the continuous hard work, delivery and commitment from Ivan Oliver who has devoted countless hours to the SSP golf coaching projects and primary and secondary competitions that are run across the academic year.
“In addition to Ivan’s work, this is also a result of the highly valuable work that Gregg Weir, at Headlands School, has put in and his relentless efforts in raising the bar every year to provide quality events and programmes for his secondary and primary feeder schools.
“We were very privileged to receive this at such an amazing venue surrounded by world class golf professionals at the PGA Championship venue, along with many celebrities who were attending the pro-am competitions.
“Also a huge thank you to Flamborough Golf Club for their generosity and support and allowing us to utilise their superb venue for our events.
“This would also not have been possible without them. I hope that the great work that has been achieved in golf across the SSP can continue long into the future.”
The trophy will have pride of place in the cabinet in the sports hall at Bridlington School, before going on display at Headlands School for a while.
It will be kept at Flamborough Head Golf Club during the summer holidays.
The Bonallack Award was presented by golfing great Colin Montgomerie.
