Flamborough golfer Georgina Hirst has been selected for the England Golf U16 Regional Squad for Yorkshire for the forthcoming season.
Georgina, who is the current junior captain at Flamborough Head Golf Club, was selected for the squad after a trials day at Sandburn Hall, near York.
There, the 15-year-old, impressed coaches during a nine-hole round and a series of skills tests in chipping, driving and putting.
As well as testing their golf skills, the young golfers had to take part in an initiative challenge, which Hirst passed with flying colours.
The squad is to be coached by European Tour and England Golf coach Andrew Nicholson, who has previously worked with Nick Faldo and Justin Rose.
Mum Gill said: “At the Sandburn Hall selection day Andrew was soon referring to Georgina as ‘the character of the group’, especially as she insists on playing golf with a bright pink golf ball.
“Georgina found him to be a very inspirational coach who goes into great detail about even the smallest of things.
“The worst part for Georgina was having to keep the good news quiet, following his phone call to her on the way back, until the official confirmation letter arrived a few days later.”
As part of the regional squad, Hirst will be invited to around a dozen coaching days and will have sessions in strength and conditioning, as well as looking at how to prepare mentally for tournaments.
Golfing success runs in the Hirst family and there is an element of friendly sibling rivalry.
Georgina’s handicap is currently six, although it has previously dipped to five.
Older brother Stephen, who is studying in Durham, stands at five and the pair are always trying to outdo each other.
Mum Gill, who herself plays off 11, said Georgina was looking for a career in golf. “I think she is keeping her options open.
“I think she would like and enjoy the coaching side of things and would be very good at it.
“This will be a fantastic experience. It will be good for the club too and it reflects well on Ivan Oliver, who has coached her at Flamborough.”
To help her game, Headlands School allow Georgina to have her PE lessons at the golf club, and she also works at the club shop at Flamborough Head.
