BRIDLINGTON-Millau Pétanque Club members were delighted to reach the second round of a prestigious boules competition that could see them representing England at club level against the continent’s finest.

This could take them to any destination in Europe, an exciting prospect.

Bridlington’s top players were picked to take on York Railway Institute in the opening round of the European Cup on October 6 and they did their club proud.

In a best of five confrontation Aled Jones, Christine Cann, Malcolm Oates, Chris O’Rourke, Mick Stubbs and Maurice Fidoe (pictured) were never behind and eventually ran out 3-2 winners.

They now come up against the Fox Pétanque Club in the second round to be played at Dukes Park on Saturday, October 27, starting at 10am.

Should they be victorious then, their likely opponents in round three will be the Northern region’s top-seeded club Mistral PC from Salford, but this is a team Bridlington has beaten before in the European Cup and so local players are quietly confident of another big upset.

A BIG win was on the cards for Bridlington’s Ted Beetham in a recent pairs tournament held at Doncaster PC. However, the player narrowly missed out on winning all his games and eventually finished in third place, which is still an excellent performance. His partner was Pat Rowlands (Mistral PC).
