Bridlington Maruaders are into the Merit League Division Two play off final after a 15-5 win at Withernsea.
With captain, Joe Franks injured, Matty Taylor deputised, leading a strong 20-man squad for the third team.
Withernsea started on the attack and won two penalties in front of the posts, but could not convert either.
Possession was shared for most of the first half, but with five minutes to go, Brid were awarded a scrum on the Withernsea five metre line. The ball came to the back and Tom Willson fed Michael Nugent.
He gave a short pass to Michael Clayton, who at full pace, was not going to be stopped. Nugent converted and Brid led at half time 7-0.
The visitors dominated the scrums all game and were soon driving the home side back up the hill. Nugent kicked a penalty from an infringement at one set piece and the elad was up to 10-0.
Withernsea were down but not out and put pressure back on the visitors line. Full back Michael Penny crossed the try line but the conversion from wide was missed and the difference remained at five points.
With 10 minutes to go, Withernsea tried to copy one of Brid’s line-out defensive moves on their own line. It didn’t work and Mike Ridsdale took the opportunity to score in the corner. Nugent missedthe conversion but Brid held out for the win 15-5.
The final will be against Hessle, who fought back to beat Grimsby 30-22, in two weeks time.
The venue will be announced after the Division One play-offs are completed, with both games being postponed last Saturday.
Both finals will be played consecutively at the same ground,
