Bridlington’s young swimmers were among the first people to use the pool at the town’s new £25m leisure centre, as they held their first gala there before the venue was open to the public.
The invitational gala, sponsored by BAM, the construction company who had worked on the building, saw Bridlington up against Driffield, Beverley, New Earswick and Pocklington.
Bridlington Swimming Club’s chairman Kev Sissons said: “We have been looking forward to this day for two years and watched this amazing building grow, now we are here and its everything a club could wish for it.
“It is something we will be making the most of and will be holding galas and open meets for all types of swimmer, from local club members to county and regional swimmers.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Bridlington. We had 200 swimmers who also brought family to the first gala and we can’t wait for our next one.”
The Bridlington swimmers were amazed by the new facilities but couldn’t make home advantage count and Beverley Barracudas took top spot.
The new pool, which officially opened on Monday, features a 150-seat viewing area and an up-to-date timing system.
