On a cloudy and overcast day, the scene was set for the final race in the East Yorkshire Cross Country League series.

On the start line on Sunday were runners from the clubs of Bridlington, City of Hull, Driffield, Scarborough, Beverley, Pocklington, Selby and Goole ready to race around the seaside course.

The race started outside the Ship Inn at Sewerby, running along the cliff tops towards Danes Dyke, weaving through the woods out towards Flamborough and then heading back for the sea view finish.

Muddy conditions made for an entertaining race with the Bridlington Road Runners men’s team not able to come any higher than sixth out of the eight teams.

It was left for the strong women’s team to be in the medal chances.

At the start of the race they were sitting in third with only Beverley, who were four points behind, able to knock them down to fourth, so a good battle ensued.

Cathy Wood was the first Bridlington lady, and third lady overall to cross the finish line, followed by Becky Clifton, who finished in 10th, with Pearl Bayford rounding off the ladies top three, finishing in 13th position.

Unfortunately, they were pipped to the post by a strong Beverley team who beat them to third spot by only one point.

In the men’s race, John Nolan was first to finish in 16th position with Pete Gulc not far behind in 21st place. Also having a good run was Simon Ellerker in 35th place,

The Bridlington club had some league prize winners. Wood was second in the ladies’ standings and first in her age category. Janet Potter was a winner in her age group and Bob Eyre was second in his category.

The Road Runners thanked the marshalls for organising the race and to The Ship Inn at Sewerby for putting on the buffet after the race.
