Headlands under 13 boys did the school proud at Hymers College in the Humberside heat of the Schools In2 Hockey Championships.
Their first opponents were Driffield School, who beat Headlands at the East Riding heat. Both teams played a strong game of hockey keeping the final score at 0-0. Declan Potts demonstrated excellent defending skills keeping Driffield out of the D.
The second match against Kelvin Hall saw excellenteplay from Jed Oyston, Oliver Manson and Toby Wilson. Goals were flying in with a hat trick from Manson and a goal each by Oyston and Wilson.
The third game against Hymers College was dominated by Headlands, with Hymers hardly touching the ball. Goals from Kieran Jordan and Sam Flowerdew secured a 2-0 win.
Headlands’ fourth game against Humberston Academy was a tough one, with Humberston taking an early lead. Great defence from Ben Hindson and keeper Josh Brown, allowed Manson to dribble up the pitch and score. With seconds to go, Stephen Noble, making his Headlands debut, won the team a vital short corner, which ended with a smash on the backboard by Manson and a 2-1 win.
The boys then stepped out onto the pitch to take on Vale Academy and showed excellent passing skills amongst the middle of the pitch. Good leg work from Wilson allowed a cross into Jordan who dinked it over the line. Manson then showed us how a short corner is done by hitting home another goal.
The final game of the night was against Axholme Academy who were no match for the team, with Manson and Oyston both scoring twice and Flowerdew adding a fifth.
Headlands finished tournament winners, on goal difference, and will represent Humberside at the North East Semi Finals next month.
