Fun for the family at Sunday racing

BEVERLEY’S annual August Sunday Meeting takes place this weekend, with a host of attractions for young racegoers in the course enclosure, provided as usual by The Beverley Lions, along with sports skills sessions and ferret racing.

Racing on Sunday is scheduled to begin at 1:50pm with The John Jenkins Memorial Claiming Stakes, a race which commemorates a local vet who was a member of the racecourse for many years.

This is the 12th year a race has been held in his memory.

Sunday’s feature race is the final of the Beverley Middle Distance Series, now in its second year, a Handicap contest over one mile and a half – while the players of Old Crossleyans Rugby Club of Halifax make their annual visit to Beverley to support a contest for maiden two-year-olds in conjunction with The European Breeders’ Fund.

Three-year-olds have their opportunity in The Beverley Lions Handicap Stakes over five furlongs and The Malton Racing Association Open Day Handicap Stakes over one mile and a quarter.

The title of the latter race draws attention to the Malton Stables Open Day, involving over 20 stables open from 9am on Sunday.
