Members of Archers of East Riding travelled to Wetherby to take part in the Yorkshire Archery Association Annual County Championships and Open Meeting.
Due to high winds and safety concerns the Saturday rounds had to be cancelled. Sunday’s conditions improved and before the action got underway, the East Riding club’s Trevor Astley was presented with the Yorkshire Sword, in recognition of his organisation of the Long Bow Tournament on behalf of the Yorkshire Committee
When the competition began, conditions were still challenging with a stiff changeable wind. The juniors were shooting Bristol rounds, dependent on age, with distances from 40 to 60 yards and the seniors shooting a York round comprising of 100, 80 and 60 yards.
East Riding winners were:
U14 Girl Recurve: 1st: Jessica Hall
U12 Boy Recurve: 1st: Daniel Hall
U12 Girl Recurve: 2nd: Niamh Tichener
U18 Girl Recurve: 2nd: Sophie Joyce
Junior Recurve Team Yorkshire Champions: Jessica Hall, Daniel Hall, Niamh Tichener and Sophie Joyce
Ladies’ Longbow: 1st: Penny Mowforth
Gents’ Recurve: 1st: Blain Nicholson
Highest 3rd Class Recurve: Stuart Hall
Senior Recurve Team Yorkshire Champions: Blain Nicholson, Stuart Hall, Jon Joyce and Tom Mowforth
Archers of East Riding can now boast nine current Yorkshire champions within their ranks from both target and clout competitions this year.
This is despite the fact many of the successful juniors have been shooting for two years or less.
