Hegarty's knock lifts Staithes to the top

Staithes were the biggest winners on a rain-hit afternoon in the Beckett League.

With just six games going ahead across the five divisions, Staithes took full advantage by moving to the top of the Premier Division.

They achieved this by grabbing a win by eight wickets against Heslerton.

Heslerton got away to an uncertain start after being put into bat, Simon Bowes claimed the wicket of Jake Keyworth in the first over, but fellow opener Rob Middlewood and Paul Bowes took up the baton in style.

Middlewood (46) and Paul Bowes (79) put together a stand of 104, the latter striking 10 fours and two sixes in the process.

Malc Spaven added 28, while some lusty blows at the death from Sam Triffitt and Tom Benthall took the score to 216-5.

Spinner Andrew Theaker was the top Staithes bowler with figures of 3-77.

Staithes moved away to 38-0, before Andy Slaughter picked up his 100th Premier Division wicket when he took out Stuart Pearson for a duck.

Staithes then pushed on to 76-2 after 14 overs, before Richard Hegarty and Simon Bowes came together and upped the tempo.

Hegarty went on to hit an unbeaten 115, which included 20 fours, while Simon Bowes was undefeated on 73, his knock featuring 10 fours and two sixes.

This partnership guided Staithes over the winning line with 8.3 overs remaining.

Mulgrave scraped their way to their second win of the campaign when they edged out Forge Valley by one wicket.

Gary Gibson helped Valley on their way with a score of 52, while Charles Tindall contributed 32, but the spin of Andrew Spenceley (5-34) helped to make sure they lost their final six wickets for 11 runs, leaving them on 146 at the interval.

Andrew Thompson put Mulgrave on track with 43, before Tindall's 3-46 and two wickets from John Flinton gave Valley some hope of victory.

In Division One, Settrington leapt into top spot after they beat Brompton by 40 runs.

A knock of 47 from Eddie Rounthwaite was the batting highlight of Settrington's 159-7, while Tom Pateman shone with the ball, taking 3-17 from seven overs.

Neil Fletcher posted 56 to edge Brompton closer to the victory, but 3-22 from Andy Monkman's 10.3 overs brought their innings to a close.

Cayton 2nds collected a four-wicket win in their delayed game against Wold Newton.

Gwaine Hogg's 27 was the high point of Newton's 97, as Simon Stubbs' 4-26 and 4-22 from regular first teamer Alex Townsend had their say.

Townsend then wrapped up a fine all-round performance with 41 not out, though the bowling of Mark Holtby (3-53) and James Knaggs (2-29) did cause some concern.

Wykeham 2nds boosted their Division Three promotion hopes with a win by eight wickets against Heslerton 2nds.

James Wilson was the bowling hero as he snapped up 6-31 to help see off Heslerton for 72 after 17 overs.

Only 21 from Heslerton skipper Mark Dring caught the eye.

Wykeham clinched 19 of the 20 points on offer thanks to unbeaten knocks of 17 from Dale Corcoran and 15 from Tom Poor.

Ryedale managed a win by 68 runs in their clash against Flixton 3rds.

Dan Hardey hit 50, Neil Cowton added 49 and Steve Temple chipped in with 37 not out as Ryedale moved to 154-2.

Pete Hill tried his best with 36 in the reply, but 3-24 from Cowton and 2-8 from Hardey reduced Flixton to 86-7.
