Sewerby CC skipper Adrian Long believes his side could be among the promotion contenders this season after they began their York Senior League campaign with an 85-run win over Flixton.
Long led from the front in the Division One clash, claiming an impressive 4-7 as the visitors were bowled out for just 89.
Earlier in the afternoon, new signing Nick Gibson had made a half-century against his old Beckett League rivals as Sewerby posted 174, which the captain admitted he thought was below par.
Long said: “All credit to my bowlers and fielders as it was very comprehensive in the end.
“I like to think that once we get the full team back together, as Steve Janney, Mike Artley and Ricky Robinson were unavailable, that we can push the top boys in the division and get in the mix for promotion.
“There’s a long way to go yet but a it was good start nonetheless.
Flixton bowlers Rich Malthouse (4-23) and new recruit Tom Norman (3-34) had the home side in trouble, with Sewerby dismissed in the 48th over.
But their total proved more than enough to ensure they picked up maximum points.
Long added: “It was an excellent win to start the season off against a tough Flixton side who are always around the top end.
“Lewis Beasley and Nick Gibson gave us a great start after the loss of an early wicket.
“It was nice to see Nick back on the clifftop and scoring runs again on debut. I was a little disappointed with 174 as we should have looking at 200+ at one point.
“But we had a great start with the ball and kept Flixton under constant pressure with some good fielding and disciplined bowling.
“We managed to keep getting breakthroughs at regular intervals but with Flixton they bat a long way down.
“My other signing Chris Mann, who came from Flixton, was given plenty of flak but held a great low catch to dismiss Tom Norman and also bowled great to keep the run rate going up.”
In Division Two, Bridlington claimed a six-wicket win at Londesborough Park.
The hosts were restricted to 130-8, with Harry Burton and Ben Jackson snatching three wickets apiece, Michael Drewery top-scoring with 37.
Captain Simon Leeson’s unbeaten 36, after decent innings by Richard Lount (25) and John Major (30), saw Brid home with 6.4 overs and six wickets to spare.
