THREE teenagers have signed for Bridlington Town as the Seasiders aim to get more local players involved with the first team squad.
Gareth Owen, a striker who was previously with North Ferriby United, made his debut as a substitute on Saturday in the 5-4 defeat at Pickering, while goalkeepers Scott Cooper and Steve Janney, who are both also talented cricketers, have also stepped up from the club’s Academy.
Town secretary Gavin Branton said: “Even if neither Scott or Steve figures this season or in the near future, hopefully the experience gained by both from being asked to train with the squad and being involved on match days in warm ups and around the dressing room – depending on the other playing commitments they have – will benefit their careers and progression.
“Obviously, Bridlington Town have more experienced players registered and also other contacts within the game. However, by registering Academy youngsters if the need arises and or it is felt by the management prudent to include youngsters - then they are eligible to play at short notice if needed.
“Many teams in our league and in leagues above have players signed on first team forms who are in under 19 teams or other reserve type leagues.”
