Driffield Football League looks for new direction after suspension

The Driffield and District Football League have decided to suspend their league as a lack of teams interested in joining has led them to rethink their options.

League secretary Norman Harris said: “Unfortunately we have had to suspend the league as we have had no further interest.

“We have decided to suspend so we can look at any other options in our area.

“We don’t see much of an opportunity on a Saturday afternoon but may look at other alternatives such as a Sunday League. I don’t see this season starting on time.

“We want to try and keep the league name alive and by suspending we can do that while we look at alternatives.”

Earlier this month Harris, speaking in the Bridlington Free Press, had called for more clubs to show interest to keep the league going.

Harris, who has been involved with the league as a player, referee and then league secretary for almost 60 years, was frustrated at the lack of interest from clubs.

Northcote Stars, Club de Albion and Bridlington Rovers 2nds were the only sides to have shown interest for the 2020-21 season at that point, and Harris admitted it would be a huge shame if we had to fold the Driffield League as it has been going for 120 years.
