Bridlington Town Reserves win seven-goal thriller at Sproatley

After recent inconsistencies Reserves faced a potential banana skin at an exuberant Sproatley side languishing at the bottom of the table.

However, there was no doubting the enthusiasm of the hosts as they tried to build from the back in the rain.

Reserves were gaining success on transitions but were wasteful and rushed in their decision making in the final third.

Ultimately, they did make the breakthrough and, as so often, it was Billy Tyler that delivered the opener finishing smartly in a one-on-one.

This wasn’t to deter the home side as Sproatley hit back to stun Reserves by striking twice to turn the tables.

The tension was clear as the visitors displayed growing frustration but a Lee Micklethwaite goal before half-time levelled things going into the break.

After the interval, there was a clearer sense of energy and intent as Reserves peppered more efforts at the hosts goal.

The pressure paid as Archie Brown showed great quality and technique from the edge of the D to strike the Seasiders ahead. Man of the match Tyler added his second of the game as Reserves emphasised their authority.

However, the hosts never gave in and to their credit hauled themselves back into the game to make it 4-3 and set up a nervy finish but in the end Town did enough to see out the victory.

Manager Terry Finney said: “This was an excellent team performance let down by switching off to let them back in the game and we need to be more clinical in front of goal.

“Missing so many chances is going to hurt us so we need to put them away.”

The managers man of the match was Jake Brown.

In the East Riding County League first division, Bridlington Rovers earned a 3-1 win at Hessle Sporting Club.

First-half goals from Toby Marriott and Zak Williamson put the visitors in control and an injury-time effort from Joe Davis sealed the win.

In Division Four, Bridlington Rovers Millau won a thrilling clash at Spread Eagle by the odd goal in 11.

Sam Johnson and Austen Wiles scored two goals apiece for Millau as they ended the season on a high note.

Bridlington Rovers Academy completed the perfect day for Rovers teams with a 3-2 home success against Hull Titans in Division Six.

Chris Wray opened the scoring for the Academy on 20 minutes and seven minutes into the second half Liam Banks added another for the home team, with Sam Green’s 73rd-minute effort proving to be the difference.

Bridlington Rovers Veterans B team also had a great weekend, winning 3-0 and 5-0 in a double-header against Spartans in the Hull Vets League fourth division.

The first game saw them take the points 3-0 after a Matt Hammond brace and Shane Atken’s finish.

Rovers had plenty of subs so were able to rotate freely and as Spartans tired in the second game the home side were able to keep the pressure on and they were rewarded with five goals without reply.

Their scorers were Hammond with another double, Joe Reynolds, Mark Carter and Mark Chapman as they moved up into second place.
