Wood shines as Cayton win Welford Cup final

William Wood and Daz Jones were the star men as division B title-chasers Cayton 3rds fought back from 30-4 to win tonight’s Welford Cup final against division A high-flyers Flixton 3rds at a sun-drenched Ebberston Cricket Club.

Cayton looked to be in deep trouble after slumping to 30-4 after eight overs, but a fifth-wicket stand of 88 between Wood, 39, and Jones, 40 retired, steered their side to 119-5 by the end of the 19th over.

This was the first year of the revived format of the competition, with each player apart from the wicketkeeper having to bowl two overs each and the batsmen having to retire once they reach the 40-run mark.

A dramatic final over saw three wickets, including Jones’ retirement, taken for only three runs, but the damage had been done by the hard-hitting duo who helped Cayton post 122-8.

Jones smashed four fours during his knock, while Wood, who played some stylish cover drives, hit five boundaries.

Youngster Cameron Anderson was the top Flixton bowler with 2-2 from his two overs, while fellow rising stars Fin Ward and Josh Till took 1-12 and 1-14 respectively and veterans Pete Hill and John Sowden took 1-12 and 1-11.

Despite losing the early wicket of opener Marley Ward, when he was run out superbly by the swift Sam Williams, Matty Mason, 22, and Till, 18, guided Flixton to 38-1 from seven overs and the game was in the balance.

But Lee Pettit then clean-bowled Till , and 72-year-old Trev Davies weighed in with 2-9, which included the crucial wickets of opener Mason and Sowden, and Wood bowled two economical overs to peg Flixton back to 55-4 from 11 overs.

Shaun Rennison then weighed in with 2-6 as Flixton’s middle order collapse, Williams also claiming a wicket and two more run-outs as the division A high-flyers were dismissed for 99 from their 20 overs.

Wood was named as the man of the match and was presented with the trophy by Derwent Valley Cricket League Vice-President Bob Cowton, of Cayton.

The latter also handed the winners’ trophy and awards to Cayton skipper Shaun Barrass and his players, and the runners-up award and individual trophies to Flixton captain Carl Sample.

Neither captain was able to play in the final, Barrass missing out due to work commitments and a hamstring injury in Sample’s case.
