Staithes claim dramatic Beckett Premier title win

Staithes hung on to beat Readers Scarborough Beckett Cricket League Premier Division title rivals Staxton to claim the title on a dramatic final day of the season.

Three teams headed into the final round of games with a chance of scooping the silverware, Staithes slightly ahead of their visitors with Cayton knowing that a full points win at home to Flixton 2nds, allied to a low point-scoring affair at Staithes could see them snatch the title away from both sides.

Staithes must have feared the worst when they were dismissed for only 153 runs, the top scorers for the hosts being Paul Wilson with 44 and Rich Hegarty, 32, as off-spinner Linden Gray, 4-25, and Elliott Cooper, 3-31, looked to have bowled the visitors into a title-winning position.

Staxton skipper Nick Gibson, 55, and Chris Dove, 44, helped the visitors to 116-3 and seemingly on the verge of title glory, but when Dove fell seam bowling duo Simon Bowes and Paul Theaker dried up the runs.

Bowes sparked a remarkable collapse as he snapped up a cracking 5-31 in a title-winning spell as Staxton lost their last seven wickets for just 21 runs, Theaker also taking 4-41.

Staxton finished 16 runs short on 137 in 38.3 overs to spark the title celebrations among the home team, who last won the title in 2010.

Cayton secured second place with a seven-wicket home win against Flixton 2nds.

Bulman’s 101, along with 31 from Craig Hill and Jack Pinder’s 30 boosted the hosts to 221-7, and despite Alistair Limb’s 47 Ganton could only make 127 all out in the face of fine spin bowling from Mark Dove, 5-28.
