Ricky Robinson sets sights on opening win for Bridlington CC at Sutton
Bridlington Cricket Club’s first and second teams are gearing up for their opening league games of the season this weekend.
Bridlington CC’s first team kick off their York Senior Cricket League Division One East at Sutton-on-Hull this Saturday, 12.30pm start.
The Brid side concluded their warm-up games with a 67-run defeat at Beverley, who play in the division above the Dukes Park side, last Saturday.
The hosts racked up an imposing 257-6 from their 40 overs, with 10 Brid players getting a bowl, Tom McMeeken bagging 2-44 in his five overs.
There was also a wicket apiece for stand-in skipper Ricky Robinson, Russ Robinson and Ben Jackson.
Russ Robinson then hit 55 and Josh Mainprize 52no as Brid made 190-8.
Ricky Robinson said: “We had a side split between our first and second team on Saturday and it was great to see so many players get time in the middle and/or get a bowl. Beverley had most of their first-team playing so it was a good test against a side from the level above us.
“After the poor weather of the week before it was great to see all the lads and play in decent conditions at Beverley.
“With the club bars now being open and people being able to come and watch it was a great atmosphere on Saturday.”
Robinson was impressed with the display of batsman Mainprize on Saturday.
He added: “Josh has done well in both games with a couple of good knocks.”
The vice-captain has also been encouraged by the amount of interest shown by the players since the restart.
He said: “We had 30 come down for the Natwest Cricketforce day to help get the ground ready for the season which was a great turnout.
“Also last Thursday we had 17 lads turn up for training which is a very good show for the club pre-season.
“There is every chance for anyone in the second team who is playing well to force their way into the first team as they are playing at a very good level as well in the Scarborough Beckett League Premier Division.”
Looking ahead to Saturday, Robinson is hoping his side can make a winning start to their push for the title.
The vice-captain added: “We won at Sutton in a one-sided game last year in the revised league, though they did say they were missing a few players.
“We will be going there looking for the win as our target is to win the league, but we will not underestimate them.”
Batsman Sam Tennant will look to make an instant impact on his debut on Saturday after joining from Woodhouse Grange.
Bridlington 2nds start their Beckett League Premier Division campaign at home to defending champions Filey this Saturday, 1.30pm start.
Sewerby, Wold Newton, and Flamborough begin their season a week on Saturday in the Beckett League.
Sewerby training sessions will run every Tuesday, 5.15-6.15pm for U15s and 6.30-8pm for seniors. All players new and old are welcome to come along to the nets.
