Filey stun Cayton to blow title race wide open

The battle for the Readers Scarborough Beckett Cricket League premier division title took another twist on Saturday as leaders Cayton suffered a shock 36-run loss at Filey, while rivals Staxton and Staithes both claimed victories.

Cayton must have fancied their chances of claiming victory when they dismissed the Clarence Drive club for 161, only Aaron Howard, 32, and Jamie Gilbank, 25, impressing for the hosts.

Aussie Nick Strangio struck 39 in reply and Paul Pennock added 36, but the three-pronged attack of Ryan Baldry, 4-28, Ben Briggs, 3-17, and Nathan Robson, 3-38, saw Cayton all out for 125.

Staxton are now level on points with Cayton after an impressive eight-wicket win against Flixton 2nds.

The basement team posted a decent 193-6, Will Hutchinson leading the way with 37, while Geoff Hill, 28, Mark Shackley, 27no and Mick Walmsley, 27, all made good starts.

Jodie Robson’s powerful 75 and 60 from David Morris put Staxton in the driving seat, Nick Gibson’s unbeaten 38 wrapping up the win.

Staithes edged to a two-wicket win at Nawton Grange despite a great all-round show from Nick Thornicroft.

The former Yorkshire player struck 29 and Mike Wearmouth 27 not out as Grange were all out for 135, Stuart Theaker bagging 4-20.

Thornicroft then snapped up 5-29 to give Staithes a few nervy moments before they scraped home thanks to 35 from Rich Ward and 26 not out from Ian Dixon.

Heslerton eased to a six-wicket win at home to struggling Forge Valley.

Spinner Daniel Jeminson took 4-29 as Valley were restricted to 122-9, Alex Glass, 31, and John Flinton, 25, the only batsmen to shine.

Jake Keyworth, 53, and Sam Triffitt, 43no, ensured the win for Heslerton.

Adrian Turnbull’s unbeaten 119 guided Ebberston to a 126-run win at second-from-bottom Scalby.

Eddie Craggs also smashed a decent 59 as the visitors posted 240-2, and Ian Atkinson snapped up 5-37 as Scalby slipped to 114 all out in reply despite a defiant 38 from Joe Hills.

Mulgrave secured promotion from Division A with a 117-run win at Wykeham.

M Spagnuolo, 40, and Chris Clarkson, 37, shone as the leaders were dismissed for 160, Matthew Graves taking 3-3 and Dave Pearson 3-28 for the hosts.

Pete Shepherdson hit 23 in reply but was offered little assistance as the home side slumped to 43 all out, Craig Thompson bagging 4-18.

Seamer still look odds-on favourites to join Mulgrave in the top flight after their 14-run home win against Wold Newton.

Fine knocks from Gary Lawton, 41no, Darrol Lewis, 37, Jon Broadhead, 27, and Gregg Chadwick, 25, helped Seamer post 181-8, Andy Moore taking 4-40 and J Knaggs 3-17.

Lawton capped a fine all-round day with 3-12 as Newton were dismissed for 77, Paul Greenhough taking 4-13.

Openers Craig Sanderson, 96no, and Lee Jack, 26no, steered Sherburn to a 10-wicket win at Grindale.

Daley Wharton took 4-24 as Grindale were dismissed for 131.

Cayton 2nds won by 91 runs at home to Cloughton thanks to an unbeaten 87 from Brian Heywood, allied with 50 from Darren Walker and 41 from S Williams as they racked up 222-5. Cloughton managed 131-5 in reply.

Settrington defeated visiting Brompton by 161 runs.

The hosts made 237-9, Steve Beal hitting 47, A Morley 46 and Jonty Rounthwaite Jnr 38, James Bruce claiming 5-74.

Andy Monkman’s 4-14 then sent Brompton crashing to 76 all out.

Division B leaders Staxton 2nds lost at home to Scalby 2nds to give their rivals for the title a huge boost.

Matty Pearson hitt 44 and Kingsley Gray 33 as the hosts were all out for 153, Tony Geall, Tim Barton and Adie Hollingsworth scooping identical figures of 3-33 for Scalby.

Joe Ledden’s 71 then made sute of the Scalby win.

Second-placed Thornton Dale won by three wickets in a high-scoring contest at Fylingdales.

The hosts posted 211-5, Barry Heyes smacking 71 not out and Roy Grove 70, while Steve Husband added 35.

Lyle King’s 77 guided Dale home despite 4-74 from Harry Purves.

Ravenscar are still in the mix thanks to a swift seven-wicket win at home to Sewerby 2nds, who were relegated by the result.

Jon Murrell, promoted from the second team, proved to be the match-winner for the hosts with 5-2 while Will Warwick bagged 3-25 and skipper Jish Rewcroft struck an unbeaten 29 to seal the win.

Bradley Milburn’s excellent 120 helped relegated Scarborough 3rds to a 114-run win at Forge Valley 2nds.

Ben Rowe took 4-44 as Valley were skittled for 109 in pursuit of Scarborough’s 223-7.

Ebberston 2nds won by six wickets at home to Wykeham 2nds to edge closer to the Division C title.

Mike Horsley bagged 5-27 as the viusitors were dismissed for 123, Ian Thompson leading the way with 44 while Ben Norman was undefeated with 24.

Will Tyson, 35, and Jason Oakley, 27no, wrapped up the win for Ebberston.

Flamborough moved into second thanks to a nine-wicket win at Muston.

Harry Burton took 4-12 as the hosts were all out for 96, Steve Pratt hitting 29 and D Meer 28.

Andy Dixon, 40, and Luke Dixon, 30no, sealed the win.

Ryedale romped to a massive 181-run win at home to Heslerton 2nds.

Sam Batty struck a cracking 71 while Neil Cowton added a fine 65, Dan Hardy making 48 and Owen Cowton 29no in Ryedale’s massive 303-4.

Hardy then took 3-7 as Heslerton were all out for 122, despite 25 from John Howden.
