BECKETT LEAGUE: Ton joy for in-form Brough and Bradshaw

In-form batsman Tom Brough hit his second successive century, while youngster Joe Bradshaw also made it to three figures as Forge Valley defeated visitors Filey by 90 runs in the Readers Scarborough Beckett Cricket League premier division encounter at Wilson’s Lane.

The match was a runfeast, as Brough made a sparkling 105 but Bradshaw stole the show as he batted with great assurance to register his first top-flight hundred with an unbeaten 102,

Fellow rising Alex Glass also made a fine 57 not out as Valley racked up a massive 320-5.

Andy Burrell gave his side hope in response with a typically aggressive 109, but Liam Glaves’ 3-26 and three wickets from Brough saw the visitors dismissed for 230 with 13 balls remaining.

There were also runs aplenty at Ebberston, the hosts losing out by 34 runs to title-chasing Staxton.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the defending champions top four Nick Gibson, Dave Morris, Paul Witty and Jodie Robson all reached the 20s but fell to some nagging bowling from the hosts, Frankie Beal taking 2-32.

At 101-4 after 23 overs, the innings seemed in the balance, but Chris Dove, coming in at number five played with great poise, pushing for ones and twos.

He was joined by Adam Hargreaves with the score on 158-6 and the pair put on 86 for the seventh wicket in just 10 overs, Hargreaves being especially powerful off his legs in a hard hitting 64 off just 35 balls, with six sixes.

Dove remained unbeaten at the end, with a stylish 68 off just 64 balls, including six fours. Reece Milner and Eddie Craggs picked up two wickets apiece in a daunting total of 254-7.

Following tea, Adrian Turnbull, 60 off 92 balls, started well and with his side well placed on 100-2 with 20 overs still to go, they still had hope of a thrilling chase but left-arm spinner Elliott Cooper began to take control and in a fine 12-over spell, he claimed 4-47 as the wickets started to tumble.

Good cameos from Jason Oakley and Alex Machen, who both made 29, were not enough as Dave Morris also took three wickets as the hosts finished 34 runs short on 218-9.

Since the start of the premier division in 2006, Staxton are unbeaten on Ebberston’s patch, winning nine out of 10 matches, with one draw.

Staithes remain top of the pile following a resounding 210-run home win over Heslerton.

Stuart Marsay’s great start to the season continued as he battered the away attack for 147 as Staithes posted an imposing 256-9.

Adam Spaven, 3-63, was the pick of the visiting bowlers.

Heslerton had no answer to seam bowling brothers, Stuart and Paul Theaker whose fine form also continued with Stuart taking 5-15 and Paul 3-21 as the away side slumped to 46 all out in just 18.1 overs.

Michael Dennis was another batsmen to prove his worth as he smashed a swift unbeaten 126 as Cayton crushed Scalby by eight wickets.

Scalby were dismissed for 173, skipper Adam Waugh top scoring with 48 as Cayton’s Australian leg-spinner Nick Strangio took 3-29.

Dennis was in no mood to hang around as he plundered a ton to see his side home in just 29 overs, Rhys Crowe also making 36.

Nawton Grange gained 18 points in a vital home win over Flixton 2nds, who remain winless after six matches.

Charlie Allott made 47 for the home side and James Greenlay a vital 41 not out as Matthew Drury claimed 3-21.

Stalwart Greenlay then set about the visitors batting line-up in their chase of 172 as he took 6-33 to steer his side to a fine 65-run win, despite a fine 51 from Stephen Hill.

The top-of- the-table clash saw Mulgrave end Seamer’s unbeaten division A run and move within three points of their rivals.

Mulgrave were asked to bat first and made a useful 196 all out with Craig Thompson, 40, Kieran Noble, 37, and Andrew Thompson, 30, all showing good from despite Paul Greenhough claiming 3-53.

The leaders fell 24 runs short on 172-9, with Adam Morris smacking 52 and Dave Graham’s 35 the main contributors but Carl Woodward’s 3-32 saw his team home.

Sherburn’s recent run of poor form ended with a 16-run home win against Settrington.

The hosts looked to be heading for another defeat as they slumped to 49-6 as Eddie Rounthwaite took 4-24, but Dean Foxton steadied the ship with 29, before some fine late order batting by Chris Crawford, 33no, and youngster Jack Sleight, 27no, saw their team to a respectable 161-8.

Andy Monkman also bowled well for the visitors, claiming 3-33.

In reply, Settrington fell to 10-2 before a superb 104-run partnership between opener Eddie Rounthwaite and George Rounthwaite,48, put the visitors in control on 109-2 from 33 overs.

Left-arm bowler Mike Holtby then entered the fray and completed an amazing turnaround as the swing bowler claimed fine figures of 5-28 to dismiss Settrington for 145 and leave Eddie Rounthwaite stranded on 73 not out off 132 balls.

Young spinner Jamie Thompson impressed for Sherburn, taking 2-56.

Cloughton gained their first victory of the season with a fine 74-run success over Wold Newton.

Skipper Ricky Nock led from the front with 35, but Chris Malthouse’s 42 not out saw Cloughton post 148-6.

Wold Newton had no answer to the guile of seasoned campaigner Pete Milner, whose fine season continued with match winning figures of 5-12 as he and Tom Watson’s 3-23 dismissed the hosts for just 74.

Grindale rattled up 234 home runs for the loss of five wickets against Cayton 2nds.

Liam Cousins top-scored with 63 not out, along with fine contributions from Ben Jackson, 48, Andy Smith, 38, and Ian Cousins’ 33 not out.

Paul Pennock tried to respond, making 35, but Ian Cousins claimed 4-35 and with two wickets apiece for Josh Dawson and Greg Cousins as Cayton were bowled all out for 146.

Wykeham came out on top in the local derby at Brompton who were bowled all out for 123.

Pete Webster’s 36 and Simon Noble, with 25, had the only answers to in-form bowler Dave Pearson’s 5-43.

Wykeham duo Ian Spence and Craig Batemen saw their side home with scores of 35 and 29 respectively as they won by six wickets with 12 overs to spare.

Ganton moved into the top half of the division B table following a 161-run win over ailing Scarborough 3rds as Greg Mills, making his last appearance of the season before heading away for summer work, hit a superb 148 not out to see his side to a huge 310-2.

Alastair Limb also register an unbeaten 64 and Stewart Ward made 64. Scarborough’s reply ended on 149, with Dominic Grunwell top scoring on 36.

Staxton 2nds remain top, following a six-wicket home win over Fylingdales.

Fylingdales batted first and could only muster 119 all out, despite 26 from Tom Shrimpton. Left arm spinner Kingsley Grey was the pick of the home team attacked taking 3/18.

Chris Hill’s 45 not out and 25 from Jonathan Aldcroft steered their side home.

Thornton Dale travelled to Bridlington 2nds and stay in joint second place after gaining maximum points in a comprehensive win.

The visitors batted first and a splendid 100 from Lyle King was the cornerstone of their 247 all out. Fine contributions from Mathew Todd, 62, and Lee Olliver, 32, built on King’s innings despite the attentions of Ellliot Traves, who took 3-71.

Oliver then displayed his all-round capabilities, as the former Staithes man took an excellent 7-23 to scupper any Brid hopes and along with Tim Hunt’s 3-24, saw the home side fall for 104, Pete Bowtell making 37.

Dale share second placed with Forge Valley 2nds on 87 points. Valley’s batsmen were in the runs again, with Sean Pinder hitting 132 not out and Gary Gibson, 97, sharing a double-century opening stand against struggling Sewerby 2nds as they posted 265-6.

Sewerby had no answer to Valley’s young attack, led by Tyler Beck. The youngster, in his first season in the 2nd XI returned superb figures of 5/19 and Sewerby were dismissed for 95, Louis Atkinson making 26.

Ravenscar remain in 4th, just one point behind on 86 points, following a 62 run away win at Scalby 2nds.

Good innings from Joe Bayes, 44, and Will Warwick, 41), saw Ravenscar post a respectable 178- 9 from their allotted overs despite Anthony Geall and Tom Hendry leading the way with the ball as they collared four wickets apiece.

Tom Barton made 28 in reply, but consistent performance Jish Rewcroft stopped any progress with fine figures of 6/46 to see his side to another fine win.

Wykeham 2nds upset previous division C leaders Great Habton by dismissing them for just 98 and moved into joint second in the table.

Spinner Ian Thompson’s 5-21 proved to be the main factor in setting up the six-wicket win, with Andy Shepherdson making 30 to steer his side home.

Muston moved into pole position with a comfortable win at Cloughton 2nds, despite a superb century from the home sides Chris Woodhouse.

The latter made a superb 104 as his side posted 138, Babu Matthew continuing his good form from evening league fixtures by taking 4-35.

Steve Pratt maintained his good run of scores by making 66, and 36 from Dave Meer saw Muston home.

Heslerton 2nds made a disastrous start on their own pitch against visitors Flamborough losing their first eight wickets with only 52 runs on the board but a solid ninth-wicket partnership between opening bat Ian Dade and Jonathan Duffill added 61 runs.

Duffill was caught behind for 16 but a further 19 for the last wicket boosted the final total to 132, Dade being last man out for 79 leaving Steve Milner eight not out at the close, Luke Dixon finishing with amazing figures of 7-31 for the visitors.

Replying Flamborough lost their first wicket at 13 but the second-wicket partnership between Andy Dixon, 44, and Harry Burton, 59no, took the match away from Heslerton, the visitors winning the match by seven wickets.

In an excellent contest at Seamer 2nds, Ebberston 2nds edged home by four wickets.

The home side batted first and a fine 73 from Josh Broadhead, with good support from Craig Baker, 48, and Corey Towell’s 31 saw them post 183-7. Young pace bowler Joe Dunnett took 4-28 for the visitors.

Ebberston’s response featured a fine 81 from D Bentley and with Dunnett completing a fine all round match making 27, Ebberston got home with 15 balls to spare despite 3-26 from Lindon Darby.
