BECKETT LEAGUE: Staxton crush Filey to stay on top

The hosts posted an impressive 301-2 as Dave Morris and Jodie Robson put on 148 in 27 overs for the first wicket before Robson departed just seven runs short of a deserved century.

Skipper Nick Gibson also made 33 and Chris Dove 31 not out, but the star of the innings was Morris.

The former Forge Valley and Scarborough left hander sealed his first ton in Staxton colours with a sublime, unbeaten 130 as his side took tea having dominated.

Filey responded well, claiming four vital batting points as they were dismissed for 185.

Paul Bowes made 44, Nathan Robson 29 and a battling 58 not out from Jamie Gregory, but left-arm spinner Elliott Cooper ensured no second innings heroics from the visitors by claiming 5-35, his third five-wicket haul this season.

Cayton remain hot on their heels as they beat Nawton Grange by 149 runs.

Jake McAleese’s excellent form continued as he provided the foundation for the innings, making a superb 94, Rhys Crowe adding 43, but an excellent, unbroken fifth-wicket stand between youngsters Josh Brown, 45no, and Ryan Woodhead, 46no, saw their side set a daunting 251-4.

Relegation-battling Nawton were never in the hunt, despite 31 from captain Jonny Pickard as seamer Tom Sixsmith, 3-34, and spinner Crowe, who took 3-24, bowled them to victory as Nawton were all out for 102.

Third-placed Staithes romped home to an eight-wicket win at Forge Valley to maintain their title ambitions.

Valley won the toss and opted to bat, with Will Tindall making a half century, Tom Brough 30 and 22 not out from third team captain John Flinton seeing the home side post 164-7.

Stuart Theaker proved Staithes best bowler with 3-26 and there were also two wickets for spinner Justin Ringin.

Nazar Khan returned to the Valley bowling attack and claimed 2-46 but Staithes duo Richard Hegarty, 70 not out, and Simon Bowes, with an unbeaten 58, raced to victory in just 29.3 overs.

Ebberston avenged the previous week’s derby defeat at Heslerton by comfortably winning by seven wickets.

The hosts won the toss and elected to field, but the visiting openers Jake Keyworth and Rob Middlewood started positively moving to 41-0 in just nine overs.

Frankie Beal, 1-14 off 12 overs, then removed Keyworth for 19 and left-arm spinner Sam Hardie followed suit in the next over, bowling Middlewood for 26.

Ebberston seamers Ian Atkinson, 2-26, and Reece Milner also bowled with great control to slow the scoring rate despite Tony Watson’s 23 and Malcolm Spaven, who made 20, but with the innings on 102-4 after 35, there was still time to launch a late assault.

Hardie was reintroduced into the attack by Ebberston captain Ben Lealman, a move which proved to be a masterstroke as he removed top scorer Stuart Pickard for 28 and the Heslerton tail slumped as they lost their last five wickets for just five runs, being dismissed for 140.

Young spinner Hardie claimed excellent figures of 5-42.

Adrian Turnbull, 19, and Jonny Mason put 61 on for the first wicket to provide a great foundation but when Mason soon followed his partner, caught behind off the bowling of Paul Kinghorn (2-22), it gave Heslerton hope.

Ben Lockey survived a chance when on nought but mixed aggression with solid defence and received great support from Tom Brickman, 20no, in an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand of 55. Lockey notched up 50 not out to steer his side to with 10 overs to spare.

Scalby made it back to back wins over Flixton 2nds to give them hope of survival and leave the beaten side 44 points adrift of safety.

The hosts racked up 245-8, youngster Brad Walker top scoring with a flamboyant 61, with both skipper Adam Waugh and opener David Holborn registering half centuries. Will Hutchinson claimed 3-46 for the visitors.

Flixton showed tremendous heart in response, with Jack Walmsley making a fabulous 110, but James Deaves, 4-53, and Ryan Labuschagne with 3-36 ensured the reply fell 27 runs short on 218-9.

Seamer and Mulgrave recorded comfortable wins as they both confirmed their division A promotion aspirations.

Seamer’s Darrol Lewis hit 84 as the leaders posted 228-6 at home against Cayton 2nds.

Adam Morris was also in positive mood, cracking an unbeaten 64 and Dave Graham made 49.

Gary Lawton returned to Seamer ranks to claim 4-30 and Matt Morris providing fine supporting taking 3-19, Cayton were always struggling, ending on 82 all out.

Mulgave hammered Grindale by nine wickets with Andy Thompson in top form. The seamer took an amazing 6-10 as Grindale were shot out for 110 with only Ian Cousins showing any resistance making 42.

Chris Clarkson made 25 and Martin Thistle 47no and Mario Spagnuolo 36no to ensure a win in just 20.1 overs.

Wykeham jumped above Grindale into third place, after a tight one-wicket win at Cloughton.

Chris Woodhouse made 27 for the home side but the pace of Dave Pearson, 4-34, and the spin of Mattty Vincent, who claimed 4-36, restricted Cloughton to 119 all out.

Veteran Pete Milner took 4-12 and Jack Hakings 4-48 as tyhey tried their utmost to force the win, but Wykeham edged over the line as the last pair saw them home.

Settrington travelled to bottom-of-the-table Wold Newton and came away with a last-over four-wicket win.

Charles Gray top scored with 37 for the hosts as John Huntsman, 3-27, and Andy Monkman, 3-29, turned the screw, Newton all out for 149.

A superb, unbeaten 71 from Andrew Taylor saw Settrington home with just four balls to spare, Andrew Moore being the home side’s best bowler, claiming 3-21.

Brompton recorded a three-wicket home win over Sherburn, with Neil Fletcher taking an excellent 6-16 as the visitors were bowled all out for 114.

Ross Triffitt also chipped in with 3-20 as only Dean Foxton, 30, showed any true form.

Brompton found the going equally as tough against the left-arm swing of Mike Holtby, 3-37, but Simon Noble and James Allison both made 20 to see their side to victory.

With division B leaders Staxton 2nds securing 20 points as Scarborough 3rds conceded the fixture, it was left to the chasing pack to try to make up ground.

Second-placed Thornton Dale earned an easy 19-point home win over Forge Valley 2nds, for whom only Sean Pinder, 40, showed any form against the in-form Lee OIiver, 4-3, and Colin Lockwood, who took 4-33, as Valley were skittled for 84.

Tim Hunt made 27 as Dale won with 17 overs to spare, losing only three wickets.

Ganton stalwart Rob Gretton hit a marvellous century, his 10th in the league as his side extended their unbeaten run to eight games.

Gretton’s 108 not out, which included 12 fours and six sixes was the foundation of their 199-5, a score that proved too much for visiting Fylingdales, who could only muster 109 in reply.

Barry Heyes was the only batsman to trouble the scorers making 26 as Brad Milburn, a player on loan from Scarborough 3rds, took 3-29.

Ravenscar secured 19 points in a comfortable 91-run win at Bridlington as Joe Bayes, 52, Jish Rewcroft, 48no, and Gerald Smith, who made 37, set up Ravenscar’s 182-3.

Rewcroft also snapped up 2-1 after tea as he and Jon Nelson, 3-15, shot out the hosts for only 91.

Scalby 2nds move into fourth after a 106-run win at Sewerby 2nds.

Tim Barton top scored with 34 and Tom Hendry made 31 as Scalby were all out for 193, Sewerby’s Will Hodgson taking a fine 5-53.

Harry Gunning tried to respond with 38, but veteran Adrian Hollingsworth’s impressive 4-4 sent the hosts crashing to 87 all out.

Division C leaders Ebberston 2nds rattled up 303-3 at Heslerton 2nds, a total that enhanced their title aspirations.

Alex Machin was again in top form, hitting a fantastic 144, while Dougie Bentley also continued his excellent recent run of scores with an equally superb 114 not out.

Liam Scott, on loan from Staxton 2nds, top scored with 42 and Steve Milner made 40 not out in reply, but seamer Eddie Swiers took 5-26 and Scott Woodhead claimed 3-69 as Ebberston secured maximum points.

Flamborough entertained Great Habton and came out on top in a high-scoring encounter by just seven runs and narrow the gap on their opponents to just two points.

Luke Dixon made a half-century and Andy Dixon 48 as the home side made 229-6. John Lumley took 4-33 for Habton.

Lumley was also in good form with the bat, making 40 and the reliant Ben Holtby hit 67, but 4-37 from G Harvey saw his side to the tight win.

Scott Wardman’s 62 was the foundation of Wykeham 2nds’ 161-9 at home against Seamer 2nds, but fine knocks from Craig Baker, 50, and Connor Mysercough, who made 37, saw Seamer to a four-wicket win.

Ryedale’s Neil Cowton was again in top form as his side won by 56 runs against Muston.

Cowton hit a fine half-century, Sam Batty made 27 and Dan Hardey (25) saw Ryedale to 157 all out.

Cowton then took over with the ball as he claimed 4-17 and with fellow all-rounder Hardey also taking three cheap wickets, Muston were always finishing short in the chase despite 37 from James Tadman.
