Gibson’s 170 against Pickering 2nds as a teenager in July 1990 remains the highest score in a league match by a Sewerby batsman.

That was in the Beckett League Division A, but he will be stepping up to spearhead Sewerby’s season in the York Senior League Division One this year.

Gibson has flourished at Staxton in recent years, and hit 537 at an average of almost 40 for Staxton in the Beckett League’s top flight last season.

He is Sewerby’s second signing of the close season, following in the footsteps of batsman and spin bowler Steve Janney, who has moved from neighbours Bridlington.

Sewerby begin at home to Malton and Old Malton on Saturday, April 16.
