The Promenades Shopping Centre is still looking for nominations for this year’s Extraordinary People Awards.

The ceremony celebrates Bridlington’s unsung community heroes and there are 10 categories where you can put forward an individual or group that you think deserves recognition.

One of last year’s winners, Cllr Liam Dealtry, has urged members of the public to make nominations.

He was named Community local Hero at the 2017 ceremony, for his work supporting forces veterans in Bridlington.

What were your thoughts when you found out you had been nominated for an EPA?

My first thoughts was that it was a wind up, and then when I realised it was true. There was a great sense of pride to know the work that I had been doing had been recognised.

How did it feel to win and be recognised for the work you do in our local community?

To hear your name read out brings a feeling of great pleasure and excitement and then gets a little bit upsetting because you see the faces of the people who did not get the award.

Everyone nominated does such amazing work and all deserve recognition. To actually be nominated and then win such an accolade is a feeling I will never forget .

How has winning the award affected your work?

It’s not about winning awards, it’s about helping your town and the people who live here, but I must say winning something and being recognised for your efforts puts a little extra spring in your step.

What would you say to someone who is thinking of nominating someone for an EPA?

Do it, there are lots of hard-working volunteers out there who, like me, don’t believe they are worthy of people nominating them, as we all feel that there are other people out there doing more than we are.

That is wrong, If you volunteer as a street pastor or as a town councillor, you are doing something in your own time, you are giving back to the town and the people who live here.
