Teenager's 'disturbing' act in Bridlington shopping centre

A teenager who was caught performing a lewd sex act on himself at a shopping centre claimed he did so because he had been drugged.

Jake Tindall had to pull “his trousers up quickly” at Promenade Shopping Centre, after a dismayed security guard saw what he was doing.

The 18-year-old also smashed a shop window before he was arrested.

Tindall, of Ferndale Road, pleaded guilty to his actions at East Riding Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (November 23).

But his solicitor, Ed Cunnah, said the teenager - who has a history of drug abuse - was convinced his drink had been spiked.

Mr Cunnah said in mitigation: “It’s not his normal behaviour.

“He was horrified when he saw the CCTV.

“In the police interview he said he wanted to apologise to the security guard for his behaviour.”

District Judge Fred Rutherford said the youth’s behaviour was “disturbing”.

Tindall was ordered to return to court after lunch, so a pre-sentence report could be prepared.

Mr Sambrook, from the probation service, told the court that Tindall had suffered a brain injury in 2013, and had developed epilepsy from the damage.

He also said the the teenager had admitted to using cannabis and also “Spice” - a synthetic form of the drug.

Mr Sambrook said: “He can’t remember anything about the offence because he had drunk a lot of alcohol.

“He fully accepts responsibility and regrets his actions.

“He is embarrassed. He knows members of the public would be shocked.

“He has used cannabis for two to three years, but he has stopped.

“He has used Spice for the past couple of years.

“He is currently on a referral order and has been attending very well, although, there are concerns about Spice.”

Mr Sambrook said jobless Tindall has previously worked in a “various labour jobs”, and now claimed £200 per month in Disability Living Allowance for his epilepsy.

Sparing him jail, Judge Rutherford issued the youth a stiff warning.

“You should be embarrassed. The amount of alcohol you took made you black out and, in particular, your memory of it.

“It is disturbing - your use of Spice.

“If you want to kill yourself, then continue using it. I come across it all the time. You must move away from it.”

Tindall was handed a 12-month community order, a 25-day supervised rehabilitation requirement and ordered to pay £150 compensation and £85 costs.
