Bridlington's Promenades Shopping Centre was briefly evacuated this morning after a fire nearby.

Black smoke could be seen from several hundred metres away and shoppers were asked to leave the centre at around 9.30am.

Humberside Fire and Rescue said it had been called to Princess Terrace, initially to reports of a bed frame in a courtyard.

A spokesman said there had been a number of 999 calls from members of the public, and although the fire had been started deliberately, it was quickly contained.

Carl Brown, centre manager for the Promenades, said: “The Promenades is open as usual after reports of an incident nearby resulted in evacuation of the centre for a short period of time.

"Correct protocols were taken once the alarm was raised.”
