A POPULAR Bridlington vicar is to take up a new job in Middlesbrough this spring.

The Rev Ben Norton of Bridlington’s Emmanuel Church will move to St Cuthbert’s Church in Marton, in the south of the city, on April 2.

Rev Norton has worked as a Pioneer Minister for the past five-and-a-half years in Bridlington, a role which requires him to get out and about in the community and work with people who do not really go to church.

Rev Norton will be fulfilling a largely similar role in Middlesbrough, using this flexible approach to help the church engage more with local people.

Rev Norton said: “I’m looking forward to the move. It’s a shame to leave Bridlington but it’s a blank sheet of paper and I hope to put the things I have learnt in the town to good use when I move away.

“I’ll miss the seaside, people have been so open and warm and happy to get involved with different activities and events.

“We’ve done charity football matches and sponsored head shaves which have only worked thanks to the support of local people.”

Rev Norton said he would miss doing the Beach Hut Advent Calendar in which a different Christmas scene or activity takes place in a seafront beach hut every day in December, but is hopeful the now annual event will continue after he leaves.
