The incident happened at around midnight on July 30, when Humber Coastguard and Bridlington RNLI were called to help a person who had fallen 30ft down the cliffs near the Skipsea Sands holiday park.

The casualty was found to have serious injuries and a Coastguard helicopter was sent to airlift them to hospital.

However, a crowd had gathered to watch the rescue operation and one of the onlookers strayed too close to the edge and also fell off the cliff, sustaining injuries described as 'equally severe' to those of the original victim.

The helicopter managed to land on the beach and both patients were flown to Hull Royal Infirmary's major trauma unit.

Bridlington Coastguard said: "We would like to remind members of the public that although watching one of our rescue operations may seem exciting, it is of paramount importance that you don’t place yourself or our rescuers in danger and listen to on-scene guidance."

Friday - the hottest day of the year - was HM Coastguard's busiest day for call-outs across the country in four years, with 329 incidents reported to them.
