‘Lights fantastic’ as installation wows people at Spa site
The recent ‘Lighting up the Coast’ event based near the Bridlington Spa has been hailed a success by the organisers and a good-sized socially distanced crowd.
The installation was created by Animated Objects Theatre Company and is part of a major Yorkshire Coast BID project along the east coast.
The project was inspired by The Odyssey, Homer’s classic tale of the Trojan wars.
Lee Threadgold, artistic director at Animated Objects Theatre Company, said: “It was great to see so much support for the project, with hundreds of people coming to visiting the installation for either sunsets or sunrises, and speak to us about The Odyssey project.
“Lighting up the Coast was a fantastic opportunity for us to meet people and let them know more about what’s coming up as the project progresses, in a safe environment we designed to be reflective of Odysseus’ ship and yet completely Covid safe.
“Once society begins to reopen further we’ll be able to promote our events more widely; create work where people will be able to gather in numbers; and have events where people can stay a little longer.
“We’d like to thank everyone who came along in Bridlington for observing social distancing rules to ensure a safe evening was had; and our local authorities for working with us to enable this initial installation to happen.
“As well as the illuminated structure itself the music, by Bridlington composer Geoff Allanach was a big hit with visitors. We’ve been working with Geoff and other composers along the coast to create a soundtrack for the project as it develops.
“We had some great comments about the Bridlington event, including ‘spectacular and ‘It’s given me hope’.
“Look out for our new geolocation story, telling how the Trojan Wars started featuring local storytellers and performers in May, and our new exhibition ‘A Thousand Ships’ in July.

“It’s going to be epic.”
