Driffield’s MP Greg Knight has pledged his support for the ‘Fight Fish’ campaign, which is currently being championed as the focus of a popular television series featuring several well known celebrity chefs.
Mr Knight has signed a House of Commons Motion which calls for the end of the practice whereby millions of freshly-caught fish are wasted.
The campaign is to raise awareness of the fact that about half of all the fish caught in the North Sea, despite dying in the trawling process, are unnecessarily thrown back.
The MP said: ‘We need to stop this appalling waste and end the current system’s failings which are due to the European Union’s flawed Fisheries Policy.’
‘We need to bring about a change to this mistaken policy as soon as possible.’ the MP added.
Around half of the fish caught by fishermen in the North Sea are unnecessarily thrown back into the ocean.
