Appearing unrepresented at Beverley Magistrates’ Court, Esberger placed his fate in the hands of district Judge Fred Rutherford.

He told the court: “Whatever you decide to do today, it’s your choice. But I’m willing to change my life and comply with everything that probation has offered to me.

“I want to stop smoking weed and obviously better myself, but that’s down to you.”

Esberger, of Cranbeck Close, pleaded guilty to two charges against him on Wednesday (March 15).

He admitted criminal damage to property valued under £5,000 as well as sending an electronic communication that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character.

Judge Rutherford said: “The offence you face today is that your mother was at home and felt there were demands for money and threats and you lost control.

“You have come to court today and say that you are willing to change. I’m not going to send you to prison immediately.”

Instead, Judge Rutherford handed Esberger a prison sentence of 12 weeks suspended for a year.

He was also ordered to pay a £115 surcharge.

Judge Rutherford added: “Don’t let yourself down. Give yourself a chance."
