A Bridlington man has been jailed following a police incident on the roof of an amusement arcade in Bridlington on Monday night.

Michael John Campbell, 24, of no fixed abode, appeared before Magistrates in Beverley on Wednesday charged with assault by beating, harassment and using threatening or abusive behaviour, in connection with the incident.

Campbell pleaded guilty to all three charges and was jailed for 26 weeks.

Police negotiators rushed to the seafront at around 7.50pm on Monday night, after Campbell, refused to come down from the roof of the Forum on Esplanade.

Campbell, who had been drinking, climbed on to the roof of the Forum, after a female alleged she had been assaulted by a man who was inside Wetherspoons earlier in the evening.

Police wanted to speak to him regarding the alleged assault, but he refused to come down.

Two police negotiators talked to him, while other officers closed the Promenade temporarily when the matter was being dealt with.

An ambulance and the fire brigade were on standby, should Campbell have injured himself or become stranded.

He was brought down safely into police custody at 11.56pm and was taken to Scarborough General Hospital as a precautionary measure.
