Adrienne Gower, senior district crown prosecutor, CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has been working closely with Humberside Police in connection with this case.

“Having carefully considered all of the evidence presented to us, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to charge John Heald with 10 offences of rape in South Yorkshire on 13 July 2014 and the murder of Bei Carter in Bridlington on 18 July 2014.

“This defendant now stands charged with serious criminal offences and has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”

Mr Heald, of Foljambe Road, is due to appear at Beverley Magistrates Court tomorrow.
