A painting by acclaimed Yorkshire artist David Hockney has sold at auction for more than £3 million.
Arranged Felled Trees was painted by Hockney, who owns a property in Bridlington, in 2008 and depicts freshly cut branches in the Yorkshire Wolds.
The painting went under the hammer at Sotheby’s in London and sold for £3,397,000, more than £1 million over its highest estimate of £2 million.
The oil on canvas was featured as a highlight in an exhibition of landscapes by the artist at the Royal Academy in 2012, and attracted an average of 7,500 visitors a day. It was also exhibited at the Guggenheim Bilbao, was part of a record-breaking evening for Sotheby’s reaching its highest-ever total for an auction of contemporary art in Europe at £130.4m.
